Myths About Squirting
Share
Squirt is just pee
A common misconception is that the fluid produced during squirting is urine. This fluid has a lot in common with pee and comes from the bladder. However, research found that it also contains other secretions, a combination of urea, uric acid, and creatinine, released by the Skene’s glands, which sit at the lower end of the urethra.
Squirting is a sign of exceptional sexual skill
The ability to squirt or getting someone to squirt is not an indicator of sexual prowess or skill. It's simply one possible response to sexual stimulation.
Squirting is female ejaculation
Squirting is not female ejaculation. Squirting comes from the urethra and is usually a large gush of liquid. Female ejaculation occurs in the vagina and releases a much smaller, concentrated amount of milky-white liquid. You can do both at once.
Squirting equals orgasm
Squirting is not always synonymous with orgasm. Both experiences are distinct and can occur independently of each other. Some women squirt when they orgasm; some women squirt without an orgasm.
Squirting always produces a lot of fluid
While squirting may produce more fluid than female ejaculation or regular sexual arousal, it’s not always enough to soak the bed sheets. Like many things, this is often exaggerated in porn and may not reflect your own sexual experience.
Squirting is embarrassing
Absolutely not. It can feel a bit overwhelming if there’s a lot of liquid involved, plus you might worry that you have simply wet yourself during sex. It’s understandable to be a little taken aback, but there’s nothing to be ashamed about. Enjoy the feeling if you can, and if you’re worried about it happening while having sex with a partner, communicate your worries with them.
Anyone can squirt
While squirting may be more common than previously thought, it’s not something that everyone can (or wants) to do. Everybody is different, as are our sexual desires and preferences. If you’re interested in finding out if squirting is something you can do, we wish you all the best on this learning journey. If it’s not for you, that’s good too!
Squirting isn't real
Squirting and female ejaculation have had mythic status themselves for a long time. This is due to a lack of research on female health and the stigmatized nature of female pleasure. In recent years, more research has been done into this topic and is revealing the breadth of experience when it comes to sex.
